    Maca

    Source

Maca is a root vegetable in the cruciferous family (related to broccoli and cabbage). It is often consumed as a powder, capsule, or extract, made from the dried root.

    Origin

    • Native to: Andes Mountains, particularly Peru (at elevations > 4,000 meters).

    • Traditional use: By indigenous people for energy, fertility, and endurance, dating back over 2,000 years.

    • Sometimes referred to as “Peruvian Ginseng,” though it is not botanically related to ginseng.

     Potential Benefits

    1. Energy & Stamina: May improve physical endurance (used traditionally by Incan warriors).

    2. Mood Balance: Some evidence for reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression.

    3. Libido & Sexual Function: Widely known for potentially enhancing libido in men and women.

    4. Fertility: Some studies suggest improved sperm quality and motility.

    5. Hormonal Support: May help balance hormones in women, including during menopause.

    6. Cognitive Function: Early research hints at neuroprotective effects, but more data is needed.

     Recommended Use

    • Forms: Powder (most traditional), capsules, tinctures, extracts.

    • Dosage: Common daily amounts:

      • 1.5 – 3 grams/day (about ½ to 1 tsp of powder)

    • Types of maca (based on root color):

      • Yellow: Most common, general use.

      • Red: May benefit prostate health and hormone balance.

      • Black: Linked to memory and sperm count improvement.

Best consumed with food. Some prefer gelatinized maca (heat-treated) to improve digestion and reduce starch.
