    BioChem™️ 1% Kojic Acid

Kojic acid is a naturally occurring compound produced by certain fungi, such as Aspergillus oryzae, during the fermentation of rice, soy, or other foods. It is a known skin-lightening agent due to its ability to inhibit tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for melanin production.

    Benefits

    • Brightens skin and reduces hyperpigmentation, melasma, and dark spots.

    • Helps even out skin tone and diminish post-inflammatory pigmentation from acne.

    • Possesses antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal properties.

    Uses

    • Common in serums, creams, soaps, and masks targeting uneven skin tone.

    • Often combined with vitamin C, niacinamide, or glycolic acid for enhanced brightening.

    • Typically used in short-term treatments or maintenance skincare.

    FDA Cautions

    • No specific FDA prohibition, but the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel considers kojic acid safe in concentrations of ≤1% in cosmetic products.

    • Higher concentrations may increase risks of skin irritation, dermatitis, and sun sensitivity—sunscreen use is recommended.

    • Animal studies have suggested weak carcinogenic potential at high doses, though not considered relevant for topical cosmetic use.

    • Some global markets (EU, UK, Japan, Australia) enforce the ≤1% limit by regulation.
