Retinol is a form of Vitamin A and part of the retinoid family.
It’s widely used in skincare for its cell renewal and anti-aging properties.
When applied to skin, retinol is converted into retinoic acid (the active form), which influences gene expression to boost cell turnover and collagen production.

Uses

• Typical concentration:

  • Start 2–3 nights per week, then gradually increase as tolerated.

• Best paired with:

  • Hydrators (hyaluronic acid, ceramides) to minimize dryness.

  • Sunscreen in the morning (retinol increases sun sensitivity).

FDA Cautions & Safety

• FDA Status:

  • Retinol in cosmetics is allowed in the U.S., but tretinoin and other prescription retinoids are FDA-approved drugs for acne and photoaging.

  • The FDA warns that retinol-containing products can make skin more sensitive to UV damage—SPF use is mandatory.

• Potential Side Effects:

  • Irritation, redness, peeling, dryness (especially in early weeks).

  • Photosensitivity—more prone to sunburn.

  • Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding without medical advice.

• Cautions:

  • Patch test before use.

  • Avoid combining with strong exfoliants (like high-percentage AHAs/BHAs) unless advised by a dermatologist.
