    BioChem™️ 1% Ferulic Acid

Ferulic acid is a plant-based antioxidant (a hydroxycinnamic acid) naturally found in foods like oats, rice bran, apples, and citrus.
In skincare, 1% Ferulic Acid refers to a formulation where ferulic acid is present at a 1% concentration—often combined with vitamins C and E to stabilize them and enhance their antioxidant effect.
It’s most common in serums and anti-aging products.

    Benefits

    1. Potent Antioxidant Protection

      • Neutralizes free radicals that cause skin aging from UV light, pollution, and oxidative stress.

    2. Boosts Other Antioxidants

      • Stabilizes Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and Vitamin E, making them last longer and work better.

    3. Anti-Aging Effects

      • Helps reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots by preventing oxidative skin damage.

    4. Brightening

      • Can even out skin tone and reduce dullness.

    5. Photoprotection

      • When used with sunscreen, may give extra protection against UV-induced damage.

    Uses

    • Commonly found in:

      • Vitamin C + E + Ferulic Acid serums

      • Anti-aging creams

      • Brightening formulas

    • How to use:

      • Typically applied in the morning, after cleansing and before sunscreen.

      • Often paired with SPF for maximum benefit.

    FDA Cautions & Safety

    • FDA Status:

      • Ferulic acid is not classified as a drug by the FDA—it’s considered a cosmetic ingredient when used in skincare.

      • There’s no FDA-approved maximum concentration for topical use, but 0.5–1% is common and generally regarded as safe.

    • Potential Side Effects:

      • Low irritation risk, but patch test recommended—especially for sensitive skin.

      • Rare allergic reactions possible (itching, redness, rash).

    • Cautions:

      • FDA reminds that antioxidants in cosmetics do not replace sunscreen.

      • Cosmetic products can’t claim to treat or prevent disease unless FDA-approved as drugs.

      • Quality and stability vary by brand—poor formulation may cause oxidation and reduced effectiveness.
