BioChem™️ 1% Alpha Arbutin
Alpha arbutin is a synthetic, water-soluble derivative of hydroquinone.
It’s considered a skin-brightening ingredient that works by inhibiting tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for melanin (pigment) production.
Compared to hydroquinone, it’s gentler and less likely to cause irritation, making it popular in over-the-counter brightening products.

FDA Cautions & Safety
-
FDA Status:
-
Alpha arbutin is considered a cosmetic ingredient in the U.S. and is not FDA-approved as a drug for skin lightening.
-
The FDA has issued warnings about hydroquinone in some products due to potential safety concerns, but alpha arbutin is generally regarded as safer and less irritating.
-
-
Potential Side Effects:
-
Low irritation risk; however, overuse or combining with strong exfoliants may cause redness or dryness.
-
Rare allergic reactions possible.
-
-
Cautions:
-
Products making strong “skin bleaching” or “permanent lightening” claims may be considered unapproved drugs under FDA rules.
-
Ingredient quality and purity can vary by manufacturer—low-quality alpha arbutin may degrade to hydroquinone if improperly stored.
