Stretching along British Columbia's mainland coast from Gibsons and Sechelt to Pender Harbour, Egmont, Lund and Powell River, the Sunshine Coast is a place of forested mountains, quiet coves, islands, beaches and spectacular Pacific scenery.

It is close enough to Vancouver for a relatively easy escape, yet its forests, waterways and small coastal communities create a distinctly slower pace. The region is known for hiking, paddling, boating, fishing, mountain biking, galleries, wellness and Indigenous cultural experiences. (Sunshine Coast Canada)

The Sunshine Coast is particularly appealing because every season has a different personality.

Autumn brings cooler air, changing forest colours and a quieter atmosphere along the coast.

It is a wonderful season for combining outdoor adventures with the Sunshine Coast's farms, markets, breweries, cideries and galleries. Tourism Sunshine Coast specifically highlights autumn as a time for harvest flavours, outdoor activities, arts and cultural events. (Sunshine Coast Canada)

What to do in Fall

Hike the forest trails
Cooler temperatures make autumn especially comfortable for hiking. Mt. Elphinstone, Tetrahedron Provincial Park and sections of the Sunshine Coast Trail offer opportunities to experience the changing landscape. (Sunshine Coast Canada)

❄️ Winter: Rainforest, Wellness & Snow

Winter on the Sunshine Coast is very different from the deep-snow landscapes of much of Canada.

At lower elevations, temperatures generally remain relatively mild, with daytime temperatures typically around 2–10°C. Rain is common from November through March, keeping the forests intensely green and waterfalls flowing. Higher elevations offer snow activities. (Sunshine Coast Canada)

What to do in Winter

Walk through the rainforest
Rainy weather can make the forest even more beautiful. Waterfalls such as Langdale Falls, Cliff Gilker Park, Kelly Falls and David Lam Falls are particularly rewarding after rainfall. (Sunshine Coast Canada)

Snowshoe at Dakota Ridge
Dakota Ridge offers approximately 20 km of groomed Nordic ski trails and 7 km of snowshoe trails when winter conditions permit. (Sunshine Coast Canada)

Cross-country ski
Higher elevations around the Coast provide opportunities for Nordic skiing.

Explore the Sunshine Coast Trail
Winter hiking is possible in suitable conditions, particularly at lower elevations.

Visit a spa
Winter is an ideal season for massages, saunas, yoga and other wellness experiences.

Stay in a waterfront cabin
Rain outside, a fireplace inside and the ocean beyond the windows make an appealing West Coast winter escape.

Visit galleries and museums
The Coast has galleries, studios and museums throughout its communities—excellent options for rainy days.

Explore the winter markets
Farmers' markets continue through winter, while November and December bring Christmas markets and craft fairs. (Sunshine Coast Canada)

Painted Boat Resort Spa & Marina

Painted Boat Resort Spa & Marina Web Address: 12849 Lagoon Rd, Madeira Park, BC V0N 2H1, Canada Phone: +1 604-883-2456

For a luxury Sunshine Coast getaway, Painted Boat Resort Spa & Marina in Madeira Park is an especially attractive option.

The waterfront resort overlooks Pender Harbour and features villa-style accommodations rather than conventional hotel rooms. Its setting combines forest, gardens, water and mountains, while resort amenities include a pool, hot tub, fitness facilities and spa experiences. (Sunshine Coast Canada)

It is particularly well suited to travellers who want to combine nature and comfort rather than spend the entire trip pursuing outdoor activities.

Important distinction: unlike Hôtel Quintessence in Mont-Tremblant or the five-star positioning of certain Canadian luxury hotels, I would not label Painted Boat a five-star hotel without a current official five-star classification. It is better described here as a luxury waterfront resort.

🌿 Indigenous Culture & Connection to Place

The Sunshine Coast lies within the traditional territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, shíshálh, Tla’amin, Klahoose and Xwémalhkwu Nations. Indigenous history, knowledge and living cultures are an important part of understanding this coastline. (Sunshine Coast Canada)

Visitors can seek out Indigenous cultural experiences, museums and educational opportunities as part of their journey.

Travel here is ultimately about more than scenery: it is an opportunity to appreciate the longstanding relationship between people, ocean, forest and land.

🚢 Getting There

Image

Image

Image

One of the pleasures of visiting the Sunshine Coast is that the journey is part of the experience.

From Vancouver, travellers commonly take the BC Ferries crossing from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale, a journey of approximately 40 minutes, before continuing by road through Gibsons and along Highway 101. (Sunshine Coast Canada)

Travellers continuing north can use the Saltery Bay–Earls Cove ferry to connect the northern and southern portions of the Sunshine Coast.

For more remote destinations and excursions, floatplanes and water taxis provide additional access.

🌅 Why Visit the Sunshine Coast?

The Sunshine Coast does not feel like a conventional resort destination.

It feels more like a collection of coastal discoveries.

One day might mean coffee beside the harbour in Gibsons, a forest hike near Sechelt, kayaking around Pender Harbour, and dinner overlooking the water.

Another might mean hiking to Skookumchuck Narrows, taking a boat toward Princess Louisa Inlet, or simply sitting on a deck watching the tide move through the islands.

And that is precisely its charm.
