THE GEOGRAPHY OF BEAUTY
Ethical Sourcing, Science and the Global Ingredient Supply Chain
A jar of moisturizer may contain only a few grams of a botanical extract, but the story of that ingredient can stretch across continents. Before a plant-derived molecule becomes part of a serum, cream, cleanser or body oil, someone has cultivated or harvested the raw material, processed it, tested it, transported it and transformed it into something a cosmetic chemist can formulate.
That makes the skincare ingredient supply chain much more than a commercial pathway. It is simultaneously a biological system, an ecological system, an economic system and a human one.
The question for the modern beauty industry is therefore no longer simply whether an ingredient is natural, organic or sustainably produced. A more meaningful question is: Can we understand the entire system behind the ingredient—from the ecosystem in which it grows to the people who harvest and process it and the scientific technology that ultimately transforms it into a cosmetic?
A truly responsible supply chain attempts to answer four questions at once: Is the biological resource being protected? Are the people producing it being treated fairly? Can the material be traced? And does enough of the economic value remain in the communities where the resource originates?
That is where ethical sourcing becomes more than a marketing concept. It becomes part of the science of modern skincare.
The Life of an Ingredient
Consider the journey of a botanical ingredient.
A plant may begin as a cultivated crop or a wild-harvested resource. It is then collected, sorted, cleaned, dried, milled, pressed or extracted. Depending on the material, it may undergo fermentation, distillation, filtration or chemical standardization before reaching a cosmetic manufacturer.
Every one of these stages can change the material's quality and its environmental and economic footprint.
For a scientist, this is particularly important because botanical materials are not chemically uniform substances. Their composition can be influenced by species and cultivar, geographic origin, soil, climate, harvesting season, post-harvest handling and extraction conditions. Two materials carrying the same INCI name can therefore originate from very different agricultural and processing systems.
Traceability can consequently serve two purposes simultaneously: human accountability and scientific quality control.
Knowing where an ingredient originated can help a manufacturer understand not only who produced it, but also how the raw material was handled before it entered the laboratory.
The ingredient's journey is therefore part of its identity.
Who Benefits From Beauty?
The economic question is just as important.
A community that exports an unprocessed botanical has a fundamentally different relationship with the global beauty industry from a community that harvests, dries, mills, extracts, standardizes and packages that botanical locally.
The latter retains more technical knowledge, employment and economic value.
This principle can be seen in the work of The Body Shop's Community Fair Trade programme. In northern Ghana, the company has sourced shea butter from the Tungteiya Women's Association since 1994. The association represents women from 11 villages who produce shea butter through an 18-stage traditional process. The Body Shop reports that the relationship provides income to the women and contributes to community projects involving education, water and healthcare.
The significance is not simply that a cosmetic company purchases shea butter from Ghana. The more interesting feature is that processing remains connected to the producing community.
The women are not merely supplying a raw biological resource. They are participating in transforming it into a commercially valuable ingredient.
The Body Shop has also described efforts to move beyond a simple “fair price” concept by examining the relationship between ingredient prices, local wages and living-income benchmarks.
This illustrates an important distinction: ethical sourcing is not necessarily philanthropy. At its strongest, it is a different structure for commercial participation.
Seven Ingredients, Seven Global Stories
The principle becomes clearer when we look at the ingredients appearing throughout contemporary skincare.
Baobab — Africa
Baobab is a particularly interesting example because its fruit can be collected from naturally occurring trees rather than requiring conventional plantation agriculture.
African producer communities can therefore participate in a value chain based on an existing biological resource. Aduna, for example, describes a direct baobab supply chain in Ghana and Burkina Faso and reports working with more than 3,300 women through its baobab network. The company says its model is based on direct relationships with rural communities and small-scale producers rather than purchasing through multiple intermediaries.
The broader scientific question is whether increased commercial demand can remain compatible with regeneration of the resource and protection of the ecosystems in which baobab grows.
That is the difference between using a natural resource and managing a renewable biological system.
Cocoa — West Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean
Cocoa demonstrates why ethical sourcing must include human-rights due diligence.
The cocoa supply chain can contain farmers, cooperatives, processors, exporters and manufacturers, creating multiple points at which traceability can be lost.
Lush provides an instructive example. The company states that its cocoa butter and cocoa powder are made from Fair Trade and organic cocoa beans supplied by small agroforestry producers in Sierra Leone, the Dominican Republic and Peru.
More importantly, Lush has described conducting a human-rights assessment of its Dominican Republic cocoa supply network in 2024 and following it up in 2025. The company reported that the assessment found no child or forced labour in the assessed supply chain, while identifying other issues requiring work with its supplier.
This is an important model of responsible sourcing because it acknowledges something that is sometimes missing from sustainability conversations:
A supply chain is not made ethical by declaring it ethical. It requires continuing verification.
Camu Camu — Amazonia
Camu camu illustrates another dimension: the relationship between commerce, biodiversity and local processing.
In the Peruvian Amazon, the Cooperativa Agraria Yarinacocha (COOPAY) organizes camu camu producers and processes the fruit locally. The cooperative reports that its model currently benefits more than 60 farming families and combines agricultural production with processing and quality control. Its development has included organic certification, agroforestry pilots and research into biological pest management.
This is particularly interesting for beauty science because camu camu is not simply being treated as a raw fruit exported elsewhere. Agricultural production, processing, quality assurance and commercialization are being connected within the producing region.
The next step for systems like this is potentially even more sophisticated: standardized botanical extracts, analytical characterization and cosmetic-grade processing conducted closer to the source.
That is where ethical sourcing begins to intersect with biotechnology.
Chamomile — Europe and Beyond
Chamomile demonstrates how ethical sourcing can also apply to cultivated plants in established agricultural regions.
Yves Rocher became a member of the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT) in 2020 and subsequently reported UEBT certification for nine of its emblematic plants, including Roman chamomile and chamomile. UEBT's framework addresses ethical sourcing from biodiversity, bringing environmental and human considerations into the sourcing system.
The significance here is subtle.
Ethical sourcing is not exclusively an issue for tropical or developing economies. It applies anywhere a company derives commercial value from biological diversity.
Green Tea — Asia
Green tea provides another example of why the agricultural system matters.
Tea is simultaneously a crop, a cultural product and a sophisticated biochemical raw material. Cultivar, growing conditions, harvesting practices and processing determine the chemical composition of the leaves and therefore the characteristics of extracts used in cosmetics.
For the beauty industry, responsible tea sourcing should therefore consider agricultural labour, land management, water use, pesticide practices, processing conditions and traceability alongside the expected polyphenol profile of the finished extract.
The same principle applies whether the tea originates in China, Japan, India, Sri Lanka, Kenya or another producing region.
A botanical ingredient is never just a molecule. It is the product of an agricultural system.
Rosehip — Chile
Rosehip provides an especially clear example of value being added close to the source.
Chilean producers have developed an international industry around Rosa rubiginosa and related rosehip materials, with companies processing the fruit and seeds into cosmetic oils within Chile.
Santa Margarita, for example, describes its long-standing work with rosehip oil and emphasizes biodiversity and local collectors within its sourcing approach.
Other Chilean producers demonstrate how the value chain can extend from local sourcing into cold-press extraction, laboratory analysis, certification and international export.
This is precisely the model worth watching: the producing country is not simply exporting a plant. It is exporting a scientifically processed cosmetic ingredient.
Moringa — Africa and South Asia
Moringa offers yet another model because it can be cultivated by smallholder farmers and processed into powders and oils.
Direct-trade businesses working with African cooperatives increasingly emphasize named producer groups, laboratory testing and traceability. Essential Care Plus, for example, describes direct relationships with African producer cooperatives and includes moringa among the botanicals it sources through producer networks.
The important principle is not that every direct-trade company automatically represents a perfect supply chain. Rather, shortening the distance between producer and purchaser can make the system more visible and therefore more accountable.
The Human Supply Chain
Sustainability cannot be separated from human rights.
A supply chain can be environmentally responsible and still expose workers to unacceptable conditions. Conversely, an ingredient can provide valuable employment while placing excessive pressure on ecosystems.
Responsible sourcing therefore has to consider both.
Child labour and modern slavery are particularly important because vulnerability can increase when supply chains are long, informal and poorly documented. Risks can include forced labour, debt bondage, trafficking, recruitment fees, unsafe working environments and exploitation of workers who have little bargaining power.
This is why modern supply-chain management increasingly involves more than supplier contracts.
Companies may use supplier codes of conduct, risk assessments, worker interviews, audits, grievance mechanisms, certification systems, traceability programmes and remediation plans.
The objective should not simply be to identify a problem and terminate a supplier. In many circumstances, responsible business conduct also means working with suppliers to remediate problems and reduce the conditions that created the risk in the first place.
The Body Shop has described human-rights due diligence within its sourcing framework, while Lush's recent cocoa assessment demonstrates how companies can investigate risks at the farm and processor level rather than relying exclusively on certification.
That distinction matters.
Certification can be a tool. It is not a substitute for responsibility.
Sustainability Begins With the Ecosystem
The word “sustainable” is often used too casually in beauty.
A plant being natural does not automatically make its harvest sustainable.
A wild botanical can be overharvested. A cultivated crop can degrade soil. Irrigation can place pressure on water resources. Increased commercial demand can alter biodiversity. Transportation and processing contribute to the environmental footprint even when the original ingredient is plant-based.
Sustainability therefore requires understanding the ecological system surrounding the ingredient.
For wild-harvested materials such as baobab and rosehip, questions include:
How much is harvested? How frequently? By whom? Does harvesting interfere with regeneration? What happens to the surrounding habitat?
For cultivated materials such as tea, chamomile and moringa, additional questions arise:
How is the crop grown? What inputs are used? How much water is required? How is soil maintained? What happens to biodiversity?
These are biological questions before they are marketing questions.
From Fair Trade to Fair Science
Perhaps the most interesting opportunity lies further down the supply chain.
The beauty industry has historically concentrated much of its formulation, analytical testing, intellectual property and manufacturing capacity far from the ecosystems that provide its biological raw materials.
There is no scientific reason that this must remain the only model.
Imagine a future in which a region producing baobab also houses laboratories capable of botanical authentication and phytochemical analysis.
Imagine Amazonian communities producing camu camu extracts using controlled drying, extraction and quality-control systems close to the farms.
Imagine rosehip-producing regions developing increasingly sophisticated cold-pressing, purification and standardization technologies.
The economic model changes dramatically.
Instead of:
resource → export → foreign processing → finished product
the system can become:
resource → local processing → scientific characterization → advanced manufacturing → global market
That creates opportunities for scientists, engineers, technicians, agricultural specialists, quality-control laboratories and manufacturing workers in the same regions where the biological resources originate.
This is where ethical sourcing becomes capacity building.
The Future of the Global Beauty Footprint
The future of responsible beauty should not be about making consumers feel guilty for purchasing natural ingredients from another part of the world.
Global trade can be extraordinarily beneficial.
A farmer in Ghana can sell shea internationally. A Peruvian cooperative can bring Amazonian camu camu to global markets. Chilean processors can turn rosehip into a standardized cosmetic oil. African producers can develop commercial markets for baobab and moringa.
The goal is not to eliminate global trade.
It is to make global trade more transparent, more equitable, more scientifically sophisticated and more environmentally responsible.
The strongest supply chains may ultimately be those in which the producing community is not merely the beginning of the chain but an active participant throughout it.
That means investing in agricultural knowledge, processing technology, analytical laboratories, worker education, infrastructure and local entrepreneurship.
It means asking not only what a botanical can do for the skin, but what the international market for that botanical can do for the people and ecosystems that produce it.
Beauty as a Global Biological System
The next generation of skincare may move beyond familiar questions such as whether an ingredient is natural, organic, vegan or clean.
It may ask something considerably more sophisticated:
Where did this biological material come from?
Who cultivated or harvested it?
Who processed it?
Can its journey be verified?
What happened to the ecosystem from which it came?
Were workers protected?
Was value retained in the producing community?
And how much scientific and technological capacity exists where the ingredient originates?
These questions transform the way we think about a jar of skincare.
Behind the botanical extract is an ecosystem. Behind the ecosystem are farmers, harvesters, processors and scientists. Behind the finished formula is a network of laboratories, technologies, transportation systems and commercial decisions.
The ingredient is therefore not merely a raw material.
It is the endpoint of an ecological, scientific, economic and human system.
And perhaps the most responsible future for global beauty is not one in which companies simply source ingredients from communities around the world, but one in which the global beauty industry helps build lasting scientific, economic and environmental ecosystems around the ingredients those communities grow.
