Saints Associated With Breast Cancer
For Catholics facing breast cancer, the Church offers more than prayers for a cure. She offers the companionship of the saints—men and women who endured suffering, illness, persecution, loss, and uncertainty while placing their lives in the hands of God.
Saint Agatha is the principal saint associated with breast cancer. Saint Peregrine Laziosi is traditionally invoked for cancer generally. Saint Gemma Galgani, although not a patron of breast cancer, is a particularly powerful saint to remember when illness brings prolonged physical suffering. Saint Zélie Martin, who died of breast cancer, offers the witness of a wife and mother who lived faithfully while facing the disease.
The saints do not replace physicians or medical treatment. We ask their intercession while entrusting ourselves to God and making use of the care available to us.
Saint Agatha
Patroness of Breast Cancer
Feast Day: February 5
Saint Agatha of Sicily was a third-century Christian virgin and martyr. Because of her refusal to renounce Christ, she endured imprisonment and torture, including the mutilation of her breasts. Catholic tradition consequently came to associate her especially with diseases of the breast, and she is widely recognized as the patroness of those suffering from breast cancer and breast disease. Her story is painful, but her witness is one of extraordinary courage. Agatha remained faithful to Christ when her body was subjected to terrible violence.
For women confronting breast cancer, her image can carry a particularly profound meaning: the dignity of the woman remains untouched even when disease or surgery changes the body.

Saint Peregrine Laziosi
Patron of Those With Cancer
Feast Day: May 1
Saint Peregrine Laziosi was a member of the Order of Servants of Mary, commonly called the Servites. He developed a serious disease of the leg that was considered cancerous and faced the possibility of amputation. According to his traditional biography, after praying before a crucifix, he experienced a miraculous healing.
His story led to a widespread Catholic devotion to Saint Peregrine as the patron saint of cancer patients. (PubMed Central (PMC))
He is therefore an especially appropriate companion in prayer for anyone living with breast cancer, metastatic cancer, or another form of the disease.

Saint Gemma Galgani
A Witness to Suffering and Trust in Christ
Feast Day: April 11
Saint Gemma Galgani was an Italian mystic who lived from 1878 to 1903. Her short life was marked by severe physical illness and profound suffering. She became particularly associated with the Passion of Christ, offering her sufferings in union with Him.
Gemma is not officially a patron saint of breast cancer. Her place in prayers for those with cancer is instead rooted in her extraordinary witness to suffering, faith, and complete trust in Christ.
The Church formally recognized her sanctity in 1940, when Pope Pius XII canonized her. Vatican documents describe Gemma as a young woman whose life was deeply conformed to the Crucified Christ. (Vatican Press)
For someone undergoing surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, hormonal treatment, targeted therapy, or living with the uncertainty of recurrence, Gemma's spirituality can be deeply meaningful.
She reminds us that suffering does not have to be spiritually meaningless.

Saint Zélie Martin
A Mother Who Faced Breast Cancer
Feast Day: July 12
Saint Zélie Martin, the mother of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, was a wife, mother, lace maker, and woman of deep Catholic faith.
She developed breast cancer and died in 1877, leaving behind five surviving daughters. Her youngest daughter would become Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. Zélie and her husband, Louis Martin, were canonized together by Pope Francis in 2015. (Franciscan Media)
Zélie's story brings a deeply human dimension to prayers for breast cancer.
She knew the fear of serious illness while carrying the responsibilities of family life. Her sanctity was not found outside ordinary life; it was lived within marriage, motherhood, work, suffering, and family love.

Other Saints Invoked for Breast Disease
Catholic devotional traditions also associate Saint Aldegundis (Aldegonde) and Saint Giles with breast disease, while Saint Peregrine is associated with cancer more broadly. These associations are less prominent than that of Saint Agatha. (Calgary CWL)

Saint Agatha,
faithful virgin and martyr,
you endured suffering in your own body
and remained faithful to Christ.

pray for all who face diagnosis, treatment, recurrence,
or the uncertainty of what lies ahead.
Saint Gemma Galgani,
who united your sufferings with Christ,
pray for those who are frightened, weary,
in pain, or struggling to understand their suffering.

pray for mothers, wives, daughters, families,
and all those whose lives have been touched by this disease.
Saints of God, pray for us.
Lord Jesus Christ,
we place before You those who are sick.
Give them courage when they are afraid,
strength when they are exhausted,
wisdom to those who care for them,
skill to their physicians and nurses,
comfort to their families,
and peace in the midst of uncertainty.
If it is Your will, grant healing.
And in every circumstance,
grant the grace to know that we are never alone.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, we place our trust in You.

A note for Pray With Us
The Church's teaching on the intercession of the saints is not a promise that prayer will produce a particular medical outcome. Rather, Catholics ask the saints to intercede with God, while continuing to seek appropriate medical care. Prayer can accompany every stage of the journey—from diagnosis and treatment to remission, recurrence, survivorship, palliative care, and grief.
