Essential Oils for Perfumery
While essential oils may be studied for their botanical origins, chemistry or cosmetic applications, perfumery asks a different question:
What does this botanical bring to a fragrance?
Perfumery is the art of arranging aroma — bringing individual aromatic materials together to create something greater than any one ingredient alone.
An essential oil may sparkle at the beginning of a composition, unfold gradually through the heart, or remain quietly in the background as the fragrance dries down. Its character may be fresh, green, floral, spicy, woody, resinous, earthy, balsamic, warm or deep.
The Fragrance Palette
A perfumer works much like an artist with a palette.
Instead of pigments, there are aromatic materials. Instead of colour and texture, there are volatility, diffusion, intensity, harmony and transition.
An essential oil can contribute brightness, softness, warmth, complexity or depth. Some materials announce themselves immediately, while others unfold slowly and remain present much longer.
This is why two essential oils may have completely different roles even when both are pleasant individually.
A bright citrus oil might provide the first impression of a fragrance. A floral oil may become the emotional centre of the composition. A spice can introduce warmth and movement, while a wood or resin can anchor the entire fragrance.
The result is not simply a collection of pleasant smells.
It is a composition.
Top, Heart and Base
Traditional perfumery often describes fragrances through three broad stages: top notes, heart notes and base notes.
These categories are useful for understanding how a fragrance develops over time, although real fragrance materials do not always fit perfectly into three separate boxes.
Top Notes
Top notes create the initial impression.
They are generally composed of more volatile materials that become noticeable soon after a fragrance is applied.
Citrus and certain fresh aromatic materials are particularly important here.

Their character can be bright, sparkling, fresh, juicy, green or uplifting.
Heart Notes

Their personalities may range from soft and floral to green, herbaceous, aromatic, fresh or richly floral.
A heart note does not necessarily appear only after the top notes disappear. Fragrance development is continuous, with materials overlapping and interacting throughout the life of the perfume.
Base Notes
Base materials provide depth and help establish the lasting character of a fragrance.
Woods, roots, resins and other less volatile materials are particularly important in this part of perfumery.
